In British Columbia, the maximum speed is 50 km/h in cities and towns, and 80 km/h elsewhere, except where otherwise posted.

British Columbia Motor Vehicle Act Regulation 26/58 requires every motor vehicle be equipped with a rear-view mirror, a muffler, and mudguards or other devices to reduce wheel spray and splash. Fog lamps are allowed but are not required.

Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) became mandatory in Canada on June 12, 2021. However, enforcement was phased in, with most provinces beginning active enforcement on January 1, 2023. This rule ensures consistent monitoring of commercial driving hours across the country.

If your service brakes aren't holding, don't try to drive without them. Pull over and let your vehicle slow to a stop. Set your parking brakes (and for added safety, block your wheels too). Then exit your vehicle and check your brakes to find out what's wrong.

Under special circumstances, a traffic officer may be directing the flow of traffic. You must always follow the officer's directions even if you have to violate road rules or disregard traffic signs, signals, or pavement markings.

Commercial vehicles cannot exceed 2.6 metres (about 8½ feet) in width, which implies that semi-trailers cannot exceed 2.6 metres in width. This regulation helps ensure road safety and easy maneuverability of the vehicle on the roads.

The purpose of the pre-trip vehicle inspection is safety: Find and fix problems that could cause a crash or a breakdown, before you take the vehicle on the road. Here is one way to inspect all the relevant items: 1. Check under the hood. 2. Walk around the vehicle to do a circle check to inspect various items. 3. Get into the cab to check gauges, etc. 4. Finally check for satisfactory brake and steering response.

Under British Columbia Motor Vehicle Act Regulation 26/58, any load overhanging the rear of a vehicle by 1.2 metres (4 feet) or more should be marked by a red light in darkness and by a red flag or red marker at all other times. ("Darkness" is defined as from one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise, as well as whenever visibility is less than 60 metres (500 feet) because of insufficient light.)

The alternator is an electrical generator, which produces electricity whenever the engine is running. It first produces alternating current (AC), which it then converts to direct current (DC) to charge the batteries in the electrical system.

There is no fixed maximum stopping distance. Your stopping distance increases as your speed increases. However, you should always drive so that you can stop within a safe distance if need be.

Under the British Columbia Motor Vehicle Act, a police officer may, at any time, require the driver of a commercial motor vehicle being driven on a roadway to stop for inspection. The officer may also direct the driver of the vehicle to drive it to the nearest inspection station where the inspection will be continued.

Under conditions of fog or blowing snow, use low beams. High beams can reflect off precipitation and cause glare. If your vehicle is equipped with fog lights, you can use them too. However, if conditions get so bad that visibility is reduced to near zero, pull as far off the road as possible and stop until visibility improves. Remember: If you can't see, you can't drive.

The pyrometer is a dashboard gauge that measures the temperature of the exhaust gases. It reads a sensor that is installed in the exhaust system. The turbocharger is powered by exhaust gases. If exhaust gas temperature (EGT) rises too high, the extremely hot exhaust gases could damage the turbocharger. EGT is also an indirect measure of the combustion temperature inside the engine. Excessively high EGT could also mean excessively high combustion temperature, which could even damage the pistons eventually if the problem is not corrected.

The driver's log book must contain a lot of general information, such as the date, the names of the driver and any co-drivers, the cycle that the driver is following, and the odometer readings. Refer to Standard 9 (Hours of Service) of the National Safety Code for a complete list of required entries.

To enter a highway from a private road or driveway, you must signal your intention and yield the right-of-way to pedestrians on the sidewalk and traffic on the highway.

As you move along the freeway entrance ramp, look ahead and check your mirrors and blind spots to assess the traffic to see where you will move into the nearest freeway lane. As you leave the ramp, you enter an acceleration lane. In the acceleration lane, signal your intention and increase your speed to match that of traffic on the freeway. Then merge smoothly with freeway traffic.

A driver is not required to keep a daily log for a day if the driver (a) drives a commercial motor vehicle solely within a radius of 160 kilometres of his or her starting location, and (b) returns at the end of the day to the same location from which he or she started. [Standard 9 – Hours of Service, National Safety Code]

The maximum allowed length of a semi-trailer is 16.2 metres (about 53.1 feet). The maximum allowed wheelbase of the semi-trailer is 12.5 metres. The maximum overall length of the tractor-trailer must not exceed 23.0 metres. If any of these dimensions are exceeded, you'll need to obtain an oversize permit.

Before you start a pre-trip inspection, block (chock) the wheels so the vehicle can't move.

Amperes ("amps" for short) are a measure of electrical current flow, named after the scientist André-Marie Ampère, who invented the electrical solenoid. Volts are a measure of electrical charge difference or potential difference, also known as electromotive force (EMF), which makes an electrical current flow. Volts are named after Allesandro Volta, the scientist who invented the electric battery. Watts are a measure of power, named after the inventor James Watt, who developed the modern concept of "horsepower." Finally, ohms are a measure of electrical resistance (which reduces or prevents electrical current flow). They are named after Georg Simon Ohm, who figured out that if the resistance of a circuit is doubled, twice as much voltage will be needed to produce the same amount of current.

While driving a tractor-trailer, when you curve to the right, keep your front wheels close to the centre line of the roadway to keep your rear wheels from drifting off the pavement. When curving to the left, keep your front wheels close to the right edge of your lane to keep your driver’s-side rear wheels from drifting left into the next lane.

According to the British Columbia Driving Commercial Vehicles Manual, to uncouple a combination vehicle (such as a tractor-trailer), perform the following steps in order: Set the trailer parking brakes and chock the trailer wheels. Lower the trailer landing gear. Disconnect the air and electrical lines and unlock the fifth wheel. Then pull the tractor forward far enough to disengage the fifth wheel. Set the tractor parking brakes and get out of the tractor to check that the trailer is stable and secure on its landing gear. Finally, get back into the tractor, release its parking brakes, and pull forward until it has completely separated from the trailer.

When you back your tractor to couple a semi-trailer, the fifth wheel opening must be in direct line with the kingpin of the trailer. You will back under the trailer until the jaws of the fifth wheel have closed around the shank of the kingpin.

Gross vehicle weight (GVW) or gross weight is defined as the combined weight of the vehicle and its load.

The driver must carry copies of the daily logs for the previous 14 days.
